Vereb wins swimming honor after leading Jamestown to fourth consecutive state title

In the world of elite swimming, where long hours of practice for club teams take a toll on teens’ social lives Thermal Underwear, high school swimming provides an opportunity to hang out with classmates.

However, it doesn’t the very best are any less serious when competing.

“It’s really fun being a part of a team and, in general, winning four state championships is not as important as having fun Clothing Accessories,” Jamestown senior Joelle Vereb said. “Still, it’s nice to have an accomplishment like that to show.”

The Eagles fourth consecutive Group 4A state title is among a myriad of accomplishments for Vereb, who has been selected the Daily Press Swimmer of the Year for the second consecutive season.

With her two individual and two relay gold medals in the 4A state meet, Vereb finished her career with 15 golds in 16 state career races.

“I was worried this year because it scored out (in pre-meet seedings) that we would finish second, but we came out with the win,” Vereb said. “Abby (Larson) had a great meet and broke two meet records.”

Vereb and Larson teamed with Carter Catherine Roehrle and Kaitlyn Pegram on the winning 200 freestyle relay Coats & Jackets, and with Roehrle and Ashley Adams on the first-place 200 medley relay quartet. Vereb also won her fourth consecutive 100 butterfly along with the 100 backstroke as the Eagles beat pre-meet favorite Rock Ridge by 29 points Handbags & Wallets.

“The butterfly and backstroke are similar,” Vereb said. “You have to have a lot of leg-strength and endurance because those races are hard on your legs.”

Vereb has mastered them well enough to earn a scholarship from Virginia Tech.

The anticipation she feels about going to Blacksburg and the happiness she feels about the fourth state title are mixed with sadness, considering her high school career is over.

“Coach (Molly) Sandling was like a second mom to me,” Vereb said of the Eagles coach. “We spent time in her classroom everyday and she’d give us advice on school, swimming, life, anything we needed. I’m definitely going to miss the team a lot but I’ll definitely come back to watch.”

DAILY PRESS GIRLS SWIMMING ALL-STARS

200 medley relay | Jamestown (Joelle Vereb, Ashley Adams, Carter Catherine Roehrle, Abby Larson). The Eagles got off to a stellar start at the Group 4A state meet with a title and a new 4A state record in the medley relay. Their mark of 1:46.05 improved upon the previous record set by Lafayette a year ago by more than four seconds.

200 freestyle | Maddie Morello | Menchville | Sr. Morello placed fifth with a time of 1:52.58 at the 5A state meet, fractions of a second better than New Kent senior Julianna Jones’ second-place finish of 1:52.84 at the 3A state meet.

200 individual medley | Danika Katzer | York | Jr. Katzer claimed the fastest 200-yard individual medley finish (2:01.19) in the 757 across all state meets and the Kecoughtan Invitational. She also topped her 3A state record from last season (2:02.65), but finished behind Cave Spring junior Emma Muzzy (1:59.22).

50 freestyle | Abby Larson | Jamestown | Jr. Her state championship-worthy 23.47-second race broke the state record she herself set at the 4A state meet in 2016. She claimed her third consecutive 4A state title in the event.

100 butterfly | Joelle Vereb | Jamestown | Sr. The Virginia Tech signee repeated as 4A state champion in the 100-yard butterfly for the fourth consecutive season with a 55.50-second finish.

100 freestyle | Abby Larson | Jamestown | Jr. Larson broke her own state record in the 100-yard freestyle, just as she did in the 50-yard freestyle. Her new record of 50.69 is a full second faster than her previous mark.

500 freestyle | Colby Hurt | Lafayette | Fr. In her first year of high school competition finished second in the 500-yard freestyle in 4:57.24 at the 4A state meet. She also placed second as a member of the 200-yard medley relay and 400-yard freestyle relay teams and won a state title in the 200-yard individual medley (2:02.60).

200 freestyle relay | Jamestown (Joelle Vereb, Kaitlyn Pegram, Carter Catherine Roehrle, Abby Larson). The Eagles won this relay (1:36.82) at the 4A state meet for the fourth straight season; they also won the team title in each of those seasons Bras.

100 backstroke | Joelle Vereb | Jamestown | Sr. Vereb closed out her final high school state meet with first-place finish in 56.52 seconds. She ended her high school career with 15 gold medals in the maximum of 16 races at the state level.

100 breaststroke | Danika Katzer | York | Jr. Katzer finished second at the 3A state meet in 1:04.18.

400 freestyle relay | Lafayette (Grace Olsen, Emma Freiling, Colby Hurt, Sofia Long). The Rams finished as runners-up in this event at the 4A state meet in 3:34.32, while the team earned third place overall.

Diving | Lexi Mills | New Kent | So. The first New Kent athlete to compete in diving, Mills won the 3A state title with a first-place score of 451.60. She shattered the previous 3A state record by more than 90 points.

The First Time My Son Chose To Wear A Dress In Public

It was the day before an event for which I was speaking. I had just finished up work and was heading out for the day when I realized this would be the last opportunity to run some last minute errands before my speaking event Exercise & Fitness. I had my 10-year-old son with me since he attends school where I work. Our first stop was going to be at a women’s clothing store to pick up some accessories that matched my dress Cycling Bottoms. I had just been in there to purchase my new dress Tops & T-Shirts. The store was nice, but not fancy, with a huge display of bright and colorful spring ensembles and dresses in the latest trending patterns and fabrics. I knew that my son would be in complete awe.

As I’ve written about before, my youngest child is gender creative. This means that he does not want to change his anatomy or be a girl (at least not at this point in his life) Knickers & Bras. He simply prefers all the things that are marketed to girls, and tends to bond better with girls than with boys. He has a real appreciation for fabrics, textures, and dresses. He has been this way all of his life ― it’s just who he is.

I told my son where I had to go. He had not been inside a women’s clothing store with me before ― at least not in recent years, because I actually hate shopping and hardly ever shop for new clothes. As we were driving there, my son asked if he would be able to browse the dresses while I looked at accessories. I knew the store was small enough that I could keep my eye on him, so I said yes. He then expressed interest in looking at dresses in his size if there were any. He had grown out of all his princess costumes, which are mostly made for girls ages 2-6. Plus, he had been wanting an actual, “real” dress. Not just a princess dress-up costume Thermal Underwear. Then he asked if he could maybe even try one on. I said, “Sure, why not?!” My son was suddenly super excited.

But then I realized, “oh, wait a second… I guess he actually can’t do that, because this is North Carolina ― the state that passed HB2” (a.k.a. “the bathroom bill,” a.k.a. the “public facilities privacy & security act”), which states in no unclear terms that a person can only use the public restroom/changing room/locker room/shower facility, etc., that matches the gender assigned to them on their birth certificate. Unless, of course, they have proof that they’ve actually undergone gender affirming or reassignment surgery, and have changed their birth certificate to align with this. (I still can’t type this without shuddering in disbelief and dismay). In 2016, our local government still does not understand that gender is totally separate from sex.

Sarah Anderson’s Adulthood is a Myth wins Goodreads Readers Choice Award for Graphic Novel

The Goodreads Readers Choice Awards have been running for a while and the winners have been chosen Work Utility & Safety Clothing. The Amazon-owned social network for readers annually polls users for their top picks in 20 categories. And the winner in the Graphic Novel categories was Sarah Anderson’s whimsical webcomic collection Accessories, Adulthood is a Myth.

Published by Andrews McMeel, and based on her webcomic Sarah’s Scribbles, this book was definitely a hit with its charming observations on life and quirks and what not. Everyone needs laughs and comics provide them.

Unusually for anything, you can see the exact number of votes cast for ALL of the nominees in the Goodreads awards. A total of 153,866 votes was cast this year, up from 124,471 votes last year, when Saga Vol. 4 won.

Here’s the fully list and the vote totals for each. March Vol. 3, which won the National Book Award, arguably the highest honor for a graphic novel ever, came in last, so there are some surprises. Also, please note the list from GoodReads list incomplete creator credits, with only writers listed. I’ve added artists where I knew them; apologies to anyone I missed.

Watch: Pat McGrath Names Kim Kardashian Her New Muse

On Instagram yesterday, legendary makeup artist Pat McGrath named one Kimberley Kardashian West as her new muse Golf.

In a Snow White themed video that asks Bras, “Mirror, mirror on the wall, who is the fairest of them all?” and answers Contemporary – Designer, “Kim K., duh!” we learn that Kim will be the face of McGrath’s Dark Star 006 makeup line:

Kim is a long-time McGrath fan Clothing, and posted to her website,”Working with legendary makeup artist Pat McGrath is always such an honor. She is the best at what she does. She’s teaching me all the tricks that she’s been doing at the fashion shows for years.”

Mini bags are must-haves for women on the go

Mini bags are huge.

More and more women are opting to carry a small purse rather than lugging around a large Shoes, bulky handbag.

“Women tend to carry large bags and fill them with items they ‘might’ need, which tend to accumulate over time, making their beautiful bags heavy and hard to maneuver Active,” says luxury handbag designer Tyler Ellis, daughter of the late fashion designer Perry Ellis. “I carry my mini Jamie doctor bag day and night, and it fits all the essentials. Lip gloss, credit cards, keys, glasses and phone. Honestly, what else do you need?”

A mini bag will help you pare down the items you carry, says Rosine Dull, owner of Never Enough Boutique in Greensburg. Dull says she discusses with customers their needs to help them choose the right mini bag that will fit their lifestyle.

She says some women purchase a bag per season while others find one that works all year long. These bags hold a lot more than you think, Dull says. There are even fun linings that no one else might see but you.

“Mini bags are organizers Knickers,” she says. “They are great for traveling and are made so that everything you need fits. Most are lightweight and can be worn as a cross-body bag, which is a plus for women who need their hands free. They also can then be put in a larger tote.”

The mini bag can be a fun accessory, says Ellis, from choosing a bold color to a funky skin, allowing them to make a statement.

“They are legit arm candy,” Ellis says. “And who can resist a tiny furry purse?”

The mini bag fits today’s fast-paced lifestyle, says Beth Drakulich, My Stylist@Macy’s, Ross Park Mall. She says the mini handbag adds a cute style to any look, but it also makes women downsize their lifestyle to the essentials they need on a daily basis.

“Most mini bags can only fit your smart phone, ID, lipstick and keys which is all we need to get through the day,” Drakulich says. “It allows faster access to those items as well without having to dig through a large tote and become lost in the never ending bag of life.”

The smaller bags also take some weight off of women’s shoulders, she says.

“As women, we want to look professional,” she says. “If we are digging through a large shoulder bag, it not only affects our posture but we look crazy pulling out everything from hairspray, to powder, to tissues to coupons. The mini handbag helps us look better and be more organized with the necessities of daily life; phone, lipstick, credit card, ID and keys.”

Many designers are coming out with new smaller versions of their signature bags at lower prices, says Drakulich. You can now afford that designer bag you wanted in a mini size.

It’s a market that’s growing.

Small, personal accessories brought big business opportunities in 2015 Other Sports, according to the NPD Group, a global information company that uses data to interpret market trends. Approximately 20 million small personal accessories were sold in U.S. department stores, national chains, and direct-to-consumer retailers in 2015, a 4 percent increase over 2014 Shirts.

“Small personal accessories is a growing market with big potential, proving its importance to the fashion industry as more than just ways to tote money, mobile phones and cosmetics,” says Marshal Cohen, chief industry analyst for the NPD Group. “These products are functional and fashionable ways for consumers to accessorize, express their personal style, and own a piece of designer fashion, without spending a fortune.”

Go for a neutral which is definitely in for spring, Drakulich says. Colors like black will always be trendy, but it’s nice to lighten it up with colors like beige, caramel, gray, cream, nude and white, Drakulich says.

Many of these bags offer specific pockets and details to hold items such as credit cards and drivers license, says Judy Vojtech, designer and co-founder of W.H. Petronela.

There is also no better way to edit essentials than to carry a small handbag, Vojtech says.

“Your body will thank you too,” she says. “Somehow the bigger the bag, the more stuff goes into it — most of which isn’t needed on a daily basis. Life is so mobile these days that carrying a cell phone, money, a credit card, keys and lipstick is about all you need. A mini handbag is a great addition to a woman’s wardrobe because in the right material and color, it works well with daytime or evening looks. A mini handbag can also be slipped into a tote or satchel for days when you need to carry more — very travel-friendly.”
